The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords not to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes after NSFAS been given reports about some accommodation suppliers who demand NSFAS-funded students to pay for a deposit or top-up payment so as to get use of the approved private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation suppliers of your compulsory conditions, as provided by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement involving the personal accommodation providers and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS stated in a statement on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states which the lease will be paid out month-to-month on the accommodation supplier (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf on the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS terms and conditions for personal accommodation companies’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not need or allow the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or another sorts of payment towards the lessor, or any other person in reference to this arrangement, such as payment of lease, when awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor website shall don't have any recourse from the lessee for any default from the payment of rent by NSFAS," the arrangement reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation providers’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: nsfas academic pathways "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded because of an incorrect decision by NSFAS, the scholar will not be accountable for payment of any arrear rent towards the accommodation service provider, up till the day of being defunded."
